One of the Australian outback's greatest icons, the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), is staging a series of regional charity events on May 15-16 to mark its 81st anniversary.
The medical air service was created in the north-west Queensland town of Cloncurry on May 15, 1928, with the first flight taking off two days later for Julia Creek.
The organisation now spans Australia providing a range of healthcare programs.
But the service's Russell Ousley says Queensland is always remembered as the home state.
"We've got about 350 staff that are now working," he said.
"There's been incredible growth in the organisation and when it comes to what we do over the course of the year, 87,000 people will actually benefit from the services of the flying doctor just in Queensland - so that's 241 people everyday."
