The Sports Aircraft Association of Australia is urging the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) to investigate crash landings of recreational aircraft.

Currently, the peak body responsible for licensing private planes, Recreational Aircraft Australia, conducts limited investigations into crashes involving recreational planes.

Three ultralights have crashed in Western Australia in as many months.

The association's vice-president, Bo Hannington, says the industry would benefit from the ATSB's involvement in such investigations.

"I would like to see [the] ATSB able to investigate aircraft accident investigations in all types of aircraft," he said.

"All pilots are interested in the outcomes of accident investigations that may be able to help them make themselves a safer and better pilot."
