A pilot survived after his small plane crashed near an airport in Canada's capital Ottawa on Oct. 14, an airport official said on Oct. 15.

The 45-year-old man had flown from the eastern province of New Brunswick to the Ontario city of Smiths Falls to pick up his four-seat 1961 Piper Comanche, which had received a new paint.

He was on his way to Ottawa to spend the night before flying home, when he had the accident near the Rockcliffe Airport.

As the man flew towards the airport, his engine began to sputter and then cut out. The pilot tried to glide to the runway, but his landing gear clipped a fence, sending the plane nose-first into a second fence just out of the runway, according to Rockcliffe Airport manager Simon Garrett.

The pilot was unhurt but he was in shock, Garrett said, praising the airport's emergency response.
