Australia: Mildura Airport's Passengers to Be Screened

All commercial airline passengers throughout the Mildura airport will be screened from 2014.

The Mildura airport is currently required to screen only passengers and luggage on jet services run by Virgin Blue, but a new aviation white paper foreshadows its expansion to turbo-prop services.

The airport chief executive, Bill Burke, says the only surprise is the long lead time before the requirement is implemented.

"I think it's a political decision rather than a practical one," he said.

"There was an incredible amount of lobbying by Qantas to have their larger aircraft and regional services excluded, but more particularly I suspect it's a move designed to allow some of those regional airports that will be caught to organise themselves."
