American Airlines Inc., the No. 2 carrier at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, will furlough 175 pilots by the end of March, the airline confirmed on Jan. 22.
The Allied Pilots Association, the union that represents American's pilots, said that it was told that 95 pilots would be furloughed by Mar. 1.
Gregg Overman, the director of communications for the Allied Pilots Association, says that none of the 95 pilots slated for furloughing by Mar. 1 are based in Raleigh. The breakdown is as follows: 44 in St. Louis, 16 in Miami, six in New York City, nine in Washington, D.C., four in Boston and 16 who are on some type of leave.
Overman says he was unsure about where the rest of the furloughs might occur.
Missy Latham, a spokeswoman for American, said the company's last pilot furlough occurred in 2005. She added that to keep pilot levels in line with structural changes - including a decrease in capacity - the cuts were necessary.
