Survey results indicate Americans are avoiding flying because of chronic flight delays and security hassles.

Radio Australia's Washington correspondent, Kim Landers, reports a new survey shows Americans aren't catching planes because they're sick of hassles like flight delays, cancellations, lost luggage and long security lines.

A survey commissioned by the Travel Industry Association estimates that travellers avoided 41 million trips in the last 12 months.

The Association says the cost to the US economy was almost US$27 billion, including about US$9 billion in lost revenue for the airlines.

The survey showed nearly two-thirds of Americans thought the air travel system in the US was already bad and getting worse.
