The Australian airline Qantas has announced plans to cut 1,500 jobs worldwide, as it struggles with higher oil prices.

Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Dixon, says the airline will also cancel plans to hire 1,200 new employees this financial year.

He says Qantas hopes to achieve the cuts through voluntary redundancy, early retirements and leave without pay.

"It's across all our operations and there is a significant, and we made that point, number of management and support staff," he said.

Mr Dixon says the aviation industry is facing a major crisis throughout the world and Qantas needs to act decisively to ensure its future.
