Virgin Blue will begin flying between Melbourne and Auckland in September.
According to TV New Zealand, Virgin Blue Chief Executive Brett Godfrey says the company has been considering this route for some time.
Melbourne Airport Chief Executive Chris Woodruff says the announcement represents a boost for the southeast Australian state of Victoria.
He says New Zealand is the state's market and the Melbourne-Auckland route will strengthen market growth.
