Two passenger planes avoided disasters at the Chicago O'Hare International Airport in Illinois on Dec. 26, airport sources said.

A passenger jet preparing to take-off skidded off the runway and another plane was forced to return after engine problems were reported.

American Airlines Flight 1544 -- an MD-80 carrying 54 passengers and a crew of five preparing to take-off hit an icy patch. No one was hurt in the accident.

Meanwhile, another passenger jet was forced to return to the airport on the morning of Dec. 26 due to engine problems, airport sources said.

According to local media reports, the freezing rain overnight caused 30-minute delays on some departing flights at O'Hare International Airport and some cancellations.
