American Airlines this summer will begin transition to "cashless cabins" on flights within the United States and to and from Canada, the airline said on Feb. 10.

"Moving to a 'cashless cabin' allows us to streamline the in-flight sale process for both our customers and flight attendants," company vice president Lauri Curtis said.

On the flights, flight attendants will accept only major credit cards or debit cards for onboard purchases such as headsets, food and alcoholic beverages, the Fort Worth-based airline said.

Attendants will use hand-held electronic devices to scan credit cards. The airline has been using the devices since May 2006. Receipts will be provided to passengers upon request.

American Airlines serves about 250 cities in 50 countries with around 4,200 daily flights.
